SYNCHRONOUS: Modern machine tools have the capability of synchronizing the spindle rotation and spindle feed. This has made it possible to eliminate the spring compression and tension stroke utilized in traditional tapping heads. The advantage that this brings to threading is the speed by which the cycle can operate. The cost of building tapping heads has also been reduced by the elimination of the axial float mechanism.
TENSION/COMPRESSION: Tension and compression holders have been the main stay of machine tool tapping for many years. Collis offers a wide range and style of these heads. We offer the widely used BILZ style tap adapter system.

Manufactured for rugged use, Collis Quick-Change Floating Holders when combined with Collis Quick-Change Tap Adapters greatly reduce tool change-over time. Within seconds your tool can be changed! By sliding the sleeve backward on the Floating Holder, the adapter and tap can be removed and a new one inserted. Release the sleeve and the adapter is locked into place and you're ready to go! Specifically designed to insure against tool pull out and against damage to the mechanism as a result of dirt and chips.
- # Push back the sleeve to release the tap.
- # Insert the tap into the adapter and twist until the square on the tap is aligned with the square on the the adapter. Push back until the adapter is fully seated against the shoulder of the square.

Radial float is still a very important component of your threading operation. The absence of radial float will restrict the tap's ability to follow the drilled hole. The lack of radial float will force the tap to flex to meet the hole, or to cut like a mill, causing premature tap wear.

Standard ISO Taps may be used with these Tap Adapters.

Torque control tapping is still the best solution for protecting your taps and work piece from tap breakage. Bottom tapping or close blind hold tapping, where chip evacuation is a concern, are prime operations for torque control tapping.

Tap extensions with tap shanks provide the advantage of driving standard taps through standard A.S.A. bushing liners. Precision fit of tap in holder. Shank dimensions are the same as tap in holder. Extensions are stocked in 3" and 6" overall lengths. Shank of holder is heat treated to maintain accuracy of tap holder.

These holders provide a positive and accurate means of driving larger sized taps without slippage or tap damage. Square shank of tap engages in square drive socket. Three equally spaced set screws position tap in holder.
